How To Be A Disc Jockey – 5 Rules To Live By

Be A Better DJ With These Rules

When you set out to be a DJ the only thing you’re thinking of is what equipment a DJ needs, how to use that equipment, and getting gigs. While that is a big part of learning how to be a disc jockey, there are all kinds of things—unwritten rules—that can make or break a DJ career. Okay maybe not rules but definitely things that can help a budding DJ get his career on track.

That’s a tall order for someone with fresh DJ skills and almost no business experience, but it is not impossible. If you know what it takes to make it in the world of DJing then the world can be your oyster, but you have to start where everyone else does: the beginning.

Or are you the laid back DJ in casual clothing who’s ‘all about the music’? It doesn’t matter what your brand, your persona is, all that matters is that you work hard to brand it.

There are some things about DJing that a DJ class can’t teach you, but nevertheless are important to reaching the level of success you desire. Continue reading “Beginners Guide To DJing – Creating Your Brand” »

Creative Ways To Choose A Good DJ Name

Alternative ways of coming up with a good DJ name

Aside from actually learning how to DJ, choosing a good DJ name fills even the strongest new DJ with dread. There seems to be so much thought and creativity that has to go into picking the right name that many DJs just go with something simple like “DJ Mike Jones” or default to teenage years with a name like “DJ Kickass”.

While these aren’t necessarily bad DJ names, you want a good name that is more than “not bad”. After all, if things go well this name will follow you throughout your career. And of course you can change your name at a later date but let’s say you have a big track with radio play; it will always be a reminder that you took a shortcut choosing your name.

So instead of asking your friends or trying to channel your musical genius into that of a wordsmith, get creative in finding a good name for your DJ career.
