I was BLOWN away by their “DJ” performance so I wanted to learn everything I could. (The DJing tips and secrets they shared along with tons of other dj lessons can be found by clicking here to sign up for our DJ training newsletter now!)

Booka Shade have been changing what it means to be “DJs” for a while now. If fact they’re way more live performers than DJs playing on studio gear more than dj equipment.

But lessons from them can still be learned such as Stay Creative! Follow your own beat and it may take you to a stage in front of 100,000people at the Love Parade in Berlin!

So if the DJIng robots aren’t the future of DJing are live “DJ Bands” like Booka Shade the future?

Seriously though this video raises the question. Is this the future of DJing? Will we ever see these types of DJ robots in the nighclubs and at raves? What do you think?

My guess is no because a DJ robot could never read a crowd and this is the most important part of DJing. Feeling the energy of the dance floor and translating that into the music you choose to rock out through the dj equipment you’re playing on…

I just stumbled across this series of posts on DJTechTools.com. They walk you through how to get started as a beginner DJ from square one. I like their DJ advice because it is well written:

I especially love the distinction they make about where you want to get to as a DJ. Do you want to be a superstar dj playing the top nighclubs in Ibiza and London like Space, Ministry Of Sound and Pacha? Do you want to just do it for fun as a hobby so you can dj mix for your freinds? Do you want to DJ as a job to make money?

There are a lot of great points to think about in these two DJ blog posts!

I remember it like it was yesterday…

My mom and sat me down at the dinner table and said “Sean…Why do you want to learn how to DJ? You’re wasting your time… You should be focused on school and your job”. At the same time, my friends used to make fun of me for dj mixing techno music because hip hop was cool at my school.

I didn’t listen to any of them…

I went out and spent my hard earned money on DJ Lessons (I couldn’t afford many), I bought DJ DVDs, I read disc jockey message forums, I looked up DJ tutorials online and I even followed DJs around to watch them playing in nightclubs…

I didn’t give up because I had a dream… this video 100% sums up that DJing dream. And now it is my reality…

What is your DJing dream?

Why do you want to know how to DJ?

These are things you need to keep in your mind as you continue forward towards your DJ career.

If you don’t keep the end goal in mind… you’re DJing dream… then you will let things like your parents telling you not to buy dj equipment and become a DJ or your friends making fun of your dj music bring you down and stop you from getting where you want.

The good news is that you have the power to keep this vision alive inside of you. Just keep thinking about your dream! Watch Djing videos, talk to superstar DJs (disc jockeys) and learn about their lives… and never give up

Do whatever it takes! Buy Dj lessons or DJ training products, even if you don’t have the money. Travel to a city where there are lots of top level DJs to learn from. Just do whatever it takes and you too will one day soon be living your dream just like I am…

Whats yours?!?

What a stupid question you might think to yourself, but in actual fact, there are a few DJ’s out there that seriously have no idea. Other DJ’s are more interested in one particular genre than others. How they get by in this business I do not know! Research is a vital part of learning how to DJ. There are a variety of ways of knowing what’s hot and what’s not right now:

Online Music Stores

I can guarantee you that local shops in your city or online stores such as Amazon will feature some of the hottest tracks around whenever you decide to look. Why? Because they look at the sales of each track and it would make sense to promote the tracks that are selling like hot cakes. Take a look at your nearest record shop and see what they have on offer. Remember – you don’t have to buy the track there and then, you are just getting inspiration for what is in and what is out. You will be visiting record shops more than your grocery store when learning how to be a DJ!

DJ Chart Shows

For the more poppy songs, I couldn’t recommend more taking a look at the charts. Chart shows are often played on the radio, and are normally a countdown of the 40 tracks with the most sales in the past 7 days. Don’t even bother looking at the charts for any entries by DJ Tiësto or Oakenfold – the charts are a view of what tracks the nation has been buying most.

Because your Average Joe is into pop music, it makes sense to know that he will probably buy Lady Gaga’s most recent album over a mix by the famous Sasha.

Online DJ Communities

There are thousands of DJ forums and communities out there on the big WWW, so why not post a thread or poll asking members to name their favourite tune at the moment? Also, have a look round music sites such as Last.fm. They normally suggest great artists that you have probably never heard of before that are similar to the sort of music you enjoy listening to.

So there we have it, finding out the good tracks from the bad ones is not as hard as you may think. Many people taking DJ lessons and DJ training often underestimate how important it is to research the songs you are playing. The times are constantly changing, and by keeping on top of your game by researching, you can be sure that the punters will love the tunes you play!

So the reason why I have had to take time off is because I have something called “Computer Eye Strain”. My right eye started twitching uncontrolably and this caused my vision to go blurry. I had to cancle a DJ gig because my doctor said that it was from straining my eyes too much from spending too much time on my computer!

Here’s what the doctor said and how you can stop this from happening:

So the doctor said that I can’t use a computer to DJ or produce songs in the studio or even teach DJ Lessons for a few days.

Because I use my laptop with Serato and Ableton Live to play DJ Gigs, he said that I can’t really DJ either.

To stop this from happening you should:

-ONLY spend long hours on a computer in a room where the light is darker than the computer screen. The reflection of light off of your computer screen kills your eyes!
- When you get your next computer buy one with a mat screen instead of glossy. Glossy reflects everything and kills your eyes.
- Give your eyes breaks. When they feel tired, rest them!
- Wear sunglasses in the sun.

Its funny because some DJs will think that this post contradicts another post I made a few weeks ago called Djing: Its About Your Sound where I told DJs that it is crucial to develop a sound.

A lot of DJs took that post the wrong way. They though I was saying that you had to limit your music to one sub genre to be successful as a DJ. This is not true. Yes, you have to develop your own unique sound. But your sound can consist of as many genres as you like. In fact, listening to and playing different styles of music is the best way to develop your own unique sound.

Furthermore, you will be thrown into lots of different situations as a DJ where you will be required to play different styles of music that what you would like to or what you would normally play.

I’ll give you some funny examples from my DJing…

I’ve shown up to DJ at a rave and was moved to the back room where they were expecting funky house music. ummm

I’ve been told by the promoter to bring hard house music to open for Steve Angello only to show up and find out that the crowd wanted to hear Deep House and only Deep House. Hmmmm

I’ve been at huge dj festivals where I’ve seen DJs like Eric Morillo on after Snoop Dog or Mr Scruff and they have had to adapt and keep the dance floor full.

How about you!

You probably want to play trance, house, techno, minimal techno, progressive, electro, hip hop or breaks. Perhaps something else.

Did you know that no matter what style of music you play, you probably won’t be able to play it at your first few gigs… What do I mean?

Lets say you love Trance, you want to learn to dj and want to be the next Dj Tiesto! You score a gig opening for Andy Moor or Gareth Emery. Some big Trance DJ that you like. You will have to play progressive house / progressive trance to open for him… not the big room trance music that you love.

Same goes for house. If you’re opening for a house DJ you play Deep House…. and so on.

So the dj lesson here is that you will get more gigs and be able to play in all sorts of different situations if you have a wide collection of music.

Play big anthem hits all night? No… Learn how to dj with your own unique sound but you can still do this while dabbling in different genres of music.
