DJ Mixing
Getting into DJ mixing? Want to learn DJ mixing? You’ve hit the right spot! It doesn’t matter if you’re djing with some free dj mixing software, dj mixing online or learning to DJ on your professional dj mixing equipment like Pioneer CDJs, you’re going to learn how to dj mix in this section of our site. You’ll find tips, tricks and free dj mixing lessons to help you get started!
Now if you’re anything like me you probably shudder at the word “theory”. It sounds very academic… doesn’t it. And anything relating to school I want NOTHING to do with…
That being said I found a sweet series articles that explains all of the different points of beatmatching. The different steps won’t actually teach you how to DJ… but they will help prepare you for beginning to learn the basics of dj mixing and beatmatching
For example… did you know that you can actually create a build up in the middle of a track without a build up just by looping? Try it… Set your loop in and loop out points on your CDJ or digital djing system for 4 or so bars. The music will be looping over and over and over. The same four bars… All you have to do to create a build up is to turn a little “echo” or “delay” effects up on your mixer and then start to turn the jog wheel on your pioneer CDJ.
The result? The loop starts to get shorter… and shorter until it is almost a static noise similar to what can be heard at the climax of a build up!
Then you just hit the exit button to exit the loop and pick up right from where you left off in the track!
ALL new DJs struggle with beatmatching. Some more than others. This makes sense because the human brain isn’t trained to listen to two different sounds and determine their speeds. And the process of mixing takes it one step further because not only do we have to focus on two different songs… we have to be able to tell which one is going faster!
This is much easier to determine if you throw in the songs at the right time and the right speed… hence the importance of the “cue and throw”. It doesn’t matter if you are playing MP3s, Ableton Live, DJ Turntables, DJ CD Players, Traktor Studio or other Dj Software… The Cue and Throw are ESSENTIAL for DJing.
“Cueing Up A Record” means getting the record ready to play right on the first beat… and “throwing in a record” means playing that song at the right time and the right speed.
So you might be wondering what the title of this post is all about…
I know you came here to learn how to dj but you’re probably thinking “who said anything about 10 year old kids?!?”…
Well I coach a lot of new DJs with their DJ mixing and to be honest a lot of new DJs have all of these reasons and stories about why learning to dj will be hard for them. (To make it easier sign up for our Free Dj Lessons newsletter by clicking HERE now!)
The 42 year old guy will say “I’m too old to learn how to DJ“… A lot of new DJs that are girls will say something like “DJing must be tougher for girls”… and a lot of beginner djs claim that DJing is “too technical… the dj equipment is too confusing”. I’m sure you’ve had similar limiting thoughts yourself!
What you’re about to see is a video of a 10 year old that learned to scratch and mix within only a few days. This kid can scratch records like mad! Read the rest of this entry »

When I was starting out learning to DJ I didn’t know anything. I didn’t know how DJs mixed, what type of dj equipment I should buy (vinyl turntables, CDJs – dj cd players or a digital setup), or any of the mixing basics. I took DJ Lessons but it didn’t really help…
I wanted to learn to dj in my own home but I still wanted a pro to show me how its done and to give me some practices to make my DJing skills progress faster. Now that I am a pro, I have the opportunity to make easy dj training a reality for DJs like you.
If you are learning to dj, Zabiella is one guy you want to take note of. He has mixed scratching, mixing and effects to create his own unique sound that everyone loves. In this series of videos (one above and more below) he shows you how he does it!
Here it is….straight up! Dj Mixing and scratching are two VERY different skill sets. Even though they can be used together, you will have to start by learning to dj with one or the other.
Mixing is more geared towards playing multiple songs together to create new unique songs, playing with the energy of the must to fuck with peoples emotions and to take people on a journey. Scratching is more geared towards jaw dropping short 5 minute performances.
Scratching and Mixing also require very different dj equipment to learn and play on. Scratch DJs swear by vinyl and mixers with a tight crossfader. This is because they need tough equipment that will allow them to feel the small sounds and cut back and forth rapidly in between sounds. Mixing djs have all moved to CDJs (dj cd players) and a lot are heading towards fully digital setups because mixing can be done on almost any DJ setup.
Both methods of DJing are wicked but here is why I chose learning to dj mix first over learning to scratch vinyl:
