When watching this video that I was sent by a new DJ names Katia that signed up for our video DJ Lessons newsletter… I couldn’t help but laugh because someone went to the trouble of designing a robot that could DJ and dance (its better at dancing lol) but the robots, despite being so technically advanced are playing on DJ turntables (technics 1200s). Whats up with that?… He should be rocking out on Ableton Live!
Seriously though this video raises the question. Is this the future of DJing? Will we ever see these types of DJ robots in the nighclubs and at raves? What do you think?
My guess is no because a DJ robot could never read a crowd and this is the most important part of DJing. Feeling the energy of the dance floor and translating that into the music you choose to rock out through the dj equipment you’re playing on…

Ha…
Great idea but these are a long way off entertaining the crowds. Maybe as a novelty now and again but not on a permanent basis. How can a robot build up a following? How can a robot evolve with the music. No way. Not yet. A human would still have to watch over them just incase!!
They need hands as well. That was hardly scratching was it.
Why go to all this effort when software could be made to use the internet to find the latest tunes on your bookmarked labels. Then mix them on software.
Let’s see what the future brings.
Prob would be easier just to bang a cd on and have a cut out of tiesto standing over the decks. (just a thought)
Hey Ross,
Thanks for the reply!
Make great points about a robot not being able to build a following and evolve with the music….
Could a robot ever be programmed to read the volume of a crowd and sense the fullness of a dancefloor to determine what song to play next?
When I posed the question I didnt really mean an actual robot with hands DJing… I meant a sophisticated music playing system that can play a good song at a good time.
Already we are seeing DJs replaced by these systems. A great example is a friend’s company named Music Direction. They have a HUGE database of music and have contracts with resteraunts, lounges and clubs. The clubs tell them the type of music they want played and then the system plays the songs depending on the time, capacity etc…
I personally think a DJ will always need to be there just because people like watching a DJ. It creates a certain vibe in the room. Its more of a show…
Yo this is terrible, makes me sad about the future. Some clubs really are gonna get DJs that can play from another country, to many different clubs at the same time. Robots are not far away people from taking our DJ jobs!
