MISTAKE #1: Trying To Teach Yourself To DJ…
Have you ever searched for or posted up questions looking for advice on learning to DJ only to find responses saying “teach yourself”…
I remember that when I started out this is the advice I got and it took me 2 years to get my mixing to the point where I could get a gig.
You’ve probably also noticed that the guys that give the advice of ‘teach yourself’ are also the guys that are proud to say that it took them 1 or 2 years to learn how to DJ… The DJs that say teach yourself are generally the DJs that struggled to get beatmatching and mixing and never went on to play any big gigs.
So why is this happening? Why do so many DJs recommend new DJs to teach themselves?
Its very simple…
One reason is that most DJs don’t know about the djing techniques that are out there that can get new DJs mixing faster.
But the bigger reason why most DJs preach to “teach yourself” is because that is how they learned… To recommend any other faster way of learning to DJ would be like saying “There are great ways to learn to DJ way faster but I chose the slowest method and this caused me to struggle for 2 years…”.
We humans never like to admit that we were wrong because it makes us feel stupid… So we would rather recommend a flawed system for learning to DJ (teaching yourself) and even go as far as arguing that it’s the best way to get DJing..
So to avoid the “teaching yourself” trap and to QUICKLY learn to beatmatch, mix and get gigs like a pro, the first step is to look for other DJ training methods that are out there…
If you want to learn how to dj become resourceful and us any dj training you can get your hands on!
