Looking for dj lessons? I spend a lot of my free time cruising DJ message boards, online magazines and blogs to stay on top of whats new in the dj lessons industry and to constantly find new ways to help aspiring DJs like you that are looking for a dj lesson.

One common thread I always see on message forums is new DJs having troubles finding gear, learning how to dj mix and get their beat matching tight. You probably have or currently are experiencing similar problems and have thought about looking for dj lessons in your city or online dj lessons as well.

I see so many threads saying “I have been trying to learn how to dj mix for months now and I can’t get beatmatching“.

Here is what seems to be the standard dj lessons response: “Spend more time teaching yourself. It took me a year so it will take you a year as well. Don’t bother with dj lessons!”

To be honest these guys on these message forums are LYING! Grizzled old DJs on message forums (who probably never played any big shows) will say “You don’t need dj mixing lessons… just teach yourself…. don’t waste your money”. Others will say “Just make friends with an established DJ and get dj lessons from him.”

Okay… well how do you find a DJ to give you dj lessons? They aren’t that easy to access. So you have to go meet them at the club or a party. You’re going to pay $10 per club night to get in a meet a dj mentor anyway. It doesn’t matter weather you are looking for dj lessons in New York (NYC), Chicago, Miami, Manchester or Mumbai! It will take you a few visits to get to know the DJ well enough to ask him to mentor you with ongoing dj lessons. Why not just use the $100 you would have spent on cover and drinks for your new DJ mentor and spend it on online dj lessons that will get you mixing like a pro dj TODAY.

There Are DJ Lessons Online For Everything

It doesn’t matter what you are learning to dj on.. there are dj lessons for everything from dj software such as Ableton Live, dj cd players such as Pioneer CDJs or vinyl and turntables. There are dj lessons in your area or online that will teach you everything you need quickly and easily. It doesn’t have to be expensive either!

$100 may be a lot for you now but you can make $100, $200, $500 + per dj gig. Keep in mind that your time is money. You can save the $100 and spend the next 6 months teaching yourself . Of you can spend the $100 now on dj lessons online, get mixing and playing payed gigs within a few weeks.

I say why not just save the time and effort of struggling to teach yourself and take some DJ Lessons or buy a DVD full of great dj lessons. Despite what the message forums say, these dj lessons – online, DVDs or in person - will get you DJing a lot faster and easier.

Its funny because some DJs will think that this post contradicts another post I made a few weeks ago called Djing: Its About Your Sound where I told DJs that it is crucial to develop a sound.

A lot of DJs took that post the wrong way. They though I was saying that you had to limit your music to one sub genre to be successful as a DJ. This is not true. Yes, you have to develop your own unique sound. But your sound can consist of as many genres as you like. In fact, listening to and playing different styles of music is the best way to develop your own unique sound.

Furthermore, you will be thrown into lots of different situations as a DJ where you will be required to play different styles of music that what you would like to or what you would normally play.

I’ll give you some funny examples from my DJing…

I’ve shown up to DJ at a rave and was moved to the back room where they were expecting funky house music. ummm

I’ve been told by the promoter to bring hard house music to open for Steve Angello only to show up and find out that the crowd wanted to hear Deep House and only Deep House. Hmmmm

I’ve been at huge dj festivals where I’ve seen DJs like Eric Morillo on after Snoop Dog or Mr Scruff and they have had to adapt and keep the dance floor full.

How about you!

You probably want to play trance, house, techno, minimal techno, progressive, electro, hip hop or breaks. Perhaps something else.

Did you know that no matter what style of music you play, you probably won’t be able to play it at your first few gigs… What do I mean?

Lets say you love Trance, you want to learn to dj and want to be the next Dj Tiesto! You score a gig opening for Andy Moor or Gareth Emery. Some big Trance DJ that you like. You will have to play progressive house / progressive trance to open for him… not the big room trance music that you love.

Same goes for house. If you’re opening for a house DJ you play Deep House…. and so on.

So the dj lesson here is that you will get more gigs and be able to play in all sorts of different situations if you have a wide collection of music.

Play big anthem hits all night? No… Learn how to dj with your own unique sound but you can still do this while dabbling in different genres of music.

This is a question that I get asked all the time… “Should I learn to how to dj by taking dj lessons in my city or should I find online video dj lessons?

Aside from that, here is the best advice I can give! You’re going to pay $50 – $100 per hour for a DJ Lesson. Thats a lot of money considering you will need HOURS of dj instruction! Furthermore, DJ Lessons won’t help you choose your gear, set up your gear or teach you how to get gigs.

If you can find some great DJ Lesson videos online then jump all over them. For the price of one DJ Lesson or less, you can get a video that will teach you everything about DJing that you can watch over and over. Stop, rewind, stop rewind.

Furthmore, most DJs that are teaching lessons were never that good. They may be technically proficient but most were never professional DJs because if they were, they wouldn’t have to be teaching Dj Lessons for money.

Yet thousands of new DJs take Dj lessons every day. Why?

This is a question I get a lot from a lot of aspiring DJs that want to learn to DJ. When I sit down and think about the question it makes me laugh because there are so many things that go into succeeding as a DJ. Theres the style of music you play, your motivation for djing, your style, your cd, your marketing and promotions, how to build a following, how much you network, the dj equipment you choose and many other factors.

But if I had to break it down to one secret it would be this:

“CAN’T STOP. Won’t STOP!”

The words of Puff Daddy ring true for anyone that is now living their dreams. They had to fight through some challenges and battles. They had to overcome adversity. They had loved ones and people around them telling them not to pursue their dreams and to “play it safe”.

You need to get this “Can’t stop. Won’t stop.” mentality as you get more and more aquainted with DJing.

Lets say you approach a promoter and he says “You ain’t DJing for me… You’re not good enough.” A lot of DJs would go home and sulk. Winners would work twice as hard to get a DJ gig somewhere else. They would make this setback motivate them as a DJ instead of get them down.

Lets say you’re playing your first party and you accidentally take off the wrong record causing the music to go dead. Most DJs would want to hide in the corner and beat themselves up over it. A lot wouldn’t want to play out again. Winners laugh it off and realize that because they made that mistake, they will never do it again. They learn and move on stronger.

Can’t Stop. Won’t stop!

We all want to learn to DJ or got into DJing to fulfill different needs. I will be the first to admit that I got into DJing in the first place because I was lonely in highschool and wanted to be able to make friends and date girls. I loved the idea of playing in front of a big crowd because I needed the attention back then.

But here is the bottom line… regardless of what need drove you djing (girls, party rockstar life, freedom, money etc) you need to know that you will never be successful as a DJ unless you truly LOVE this music. It always comes back to loving the music.

Some of my DJ friends criticize the fact that I am so open about the reasons why I first got into DJing. They say “screw girls…. DJing is about the music man”.

I believe that deep down we all have our own motivations for wanting to become a DJ aside from loving the music but they do make a good point.

One of the best dj lessons I have every learned from the top pros was that you have to LOVE the music you are playing no matter what. You might be in it for the girls, the lifestyle or whatever but if you don’t love the music you play, people on the dance floor will know!
