The Most Important DJ Lesson….

Dj Lessons - Love The Music

We all do things for different reasons. You, I and everyone else has different needs and these different needs dictate how we live our life on a day to day basis.

Deep right? Not really.. its simple. Some people need freedom. Others need security. Some people feel the need to be loved stronger than others. I feel the need to help people by giving them dj training.

If you feel the need to DJ then sign up for free DJ Lesson Videos by clicking HERE right now!

We all want to learn to DJ or got into DJing to fulfill different needs. I will be the first to admit that I got into DJing in the first place because I was lonely in highschool and wanted to be able to make friends and date girls. I loved the idea of playing in front of a big crowd because I needed the attention back then.

But here is the bottom line… regardless of what need drove you djing (girls, party rockstar life, freedom, money etc) you need to know that you will never be successful as a DJ unless you truly LOVE this music. It always comes back to loving the music.

Vinyl & DJ Turntables. Are They Really Dead?

dj turntables vinyl

So you want to Learn To Dj. Awesome!

Your mate that used to DJ says “go out and buy a pair of turntables and start learning to mix. You log onto the message forums and old school DJs say “buy turntables and learn the real art of DJing“.

You you want DJing advice, sign up for free DJ Lesson Videos by clicking HERE right now!

Here are the facts…. When the physical music industry fell apart 10 years ago, a lot of distributors went out of business. They owed the record labels a lot of money which they couldn’t pay so a lot of record labels also ended up going out of business. The distribution channels for vinyl records fell apart, so much so that 99% of labels stopped printing vinyl.

This is the number one reason why DJs stopped using Turntables. It wasn’t because records were too expensive. It wasn’t because vinyl was too heavy to lug around. DJs stopped playing on Turntables because they had nothing to play!

A lot of the DJs went against my advice and bought tables only to find out that they couldn’t find music to play! The only markets for buying vinyl were Ebay and local classified listing sites. Nightclubs too abandoned the turntables for dj cd players such as the Pioneer CDJ 1000s.

The great news for the die hard vinylists and for people that are learning to DJ is that you can now DJ with vinyl and have access to all of your favorite songs. The best of both worlds.

How is this possible….?!?!?!?

Poor Economy = DJ Opportunity!

The New York Times published a rather heart-warming tale about how the numbers of aspiring DJs out there has gone up significantly since the economy went belly up.

Apparently workers who have been laid off recently are considering new careers doing something that they really like, and DJing happens to be high on the list of many people’s dream jobs.

New York DJ schools dubspot and Scratch DJ Academy have experienced a large increase in students (dubspot’s enrollment numbers have doubled), with many of their new students having been made redundant.

What is a Re-Edit???

If you are just learning how to DJ, sign up for free DJ Lesson Videos by clicking HERE right now to get questions like this answered by pro djs!

I wanted to post this video as an example to help answer a question that I get asked a lot: What is a Re-edit? Different variations of this questions usually get thrown my way:

“What is the difference between a remix and a re-edit?”
“How do you do a re-edit?”
“Why do DJs re-edit?”

Its simple, a remix is where you take a track and completely rewrite it. A re-edit is where you take different pieces of the track and re-organize them as this crazy David Guetta video sort of illustrates.

For those of you that don’t know, the hip hop sample of the guy speaking “body moving….body moving….body moving” is from a Run DMC track from the early 90s. David guetta re-edits one of his favorite tracks Bodyrox – Yeah by dropping in this well known hip hop sample before “Yeah” kicks in. He isn’t mixing this in live….he edited this at home in the studio.

Of course the next question is, why would DJs want to re-edit a song? Its usually because they don’t like a certain part of a song but they like another part. So they cut the part they don’t like out and add more of the part they did. Or maybe they think a certain vocal would sound great over a grooving track so they’ll throw that in there during the break down. Or they want to make a song a little more interesting for the dancefloor by dropping in a sample from another popular track (as illustrated by David Guetta).

The top pro DJs in the world use re-editing a little differently though…

You should know by now that when learning to dj the basics are super important. Choosing the right Dj Gear (DJ CD players, vinyl turntables, software like Ableton Live?) learning to mix well (beatmatching) and understanding how to work the industry so you can get lots of big gigs are essential. But there is one more thing that stands out as a “must do” for new DJs that often goes overlooked in the mad dash to landing your first gig.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been sitting down with some of the biggest and best DJs in the world. These guys are the cream of the crop in the DJ world. We mostly sat down to catch up but I also interviewed these superstar DJs to get their secrets for making it from the Bedroom to the Dj Booth in the biggest clubs in the world. Those of you are signed up for the newsletter will get access to the interviews soon when they become available (soon!).

I have got a lot of CRAZY stories and mind blowing tips from them but there is one piece of advice that stands tall above everything else.

It sounds so simple at first. Its almost common sense. But so many new DJs fail to follow this one cardinal rule that will largely determine their success or failure as a DJ.

Here it is….. DEVELOP YOUR SOUND.

You’re probably thinking that’s it? Thats the big secret? Why is it such a big deal to develop your own sound as a DJ? Here’s why…

Learn To DJ While Getting DJ Requests…

Learn To DJ with Dj Requests

So you guys probably read my DJ Steve Angello vs Paris Hilton post from a few days ago. Steve was DJing at a popular nightclub in Miami at the Winter Music Conference when Paris Hilton came up and asked him to play Hip Hop.

If you would like to be a DJ playing in big clubs and parties with celebrities, start DJing now by signing up for free DJ Lesson Videos by clicking HERE right now!

This was Steve Angello’s party and on top of that, this was the Winter Music Conference where 500,000 dance music fanatics flock to Miami to hear the newest and best in dance, techno, trance and house music. Steve was in no position to play Hip Hop even if he wanted to. Paris didn’t like this and it resulted in her boyfriend fighting the club doormen outside.

While DJing this past weekend I was faced with a similar situation when a group of drunk girls came into the packed club on a “stagette”. One wanted me to play the new Britney Spears track… I was polite and said that I couldn’t play it. She got angry and said “If you’re not going to play it then I WILL”. She grabbed my headphones and lunged at the CD Decks.

She went for the one dj cd player that was playing out loud so when she put her hand on it to ‘scratch’ the song stopped dead in the club. Silence. Then she hit the next song button and a different song started to play.

Part of becoming a good DJ is that you have to Learn To Dj while getting bad song requests. To avoid horror stories like this I have come up with 10 excuses to avoid DJ requests. Some are hilarious, but all are effective. I’ve tried every one:

1) What was that? What was that? What was that?

Just keep shouting “what… I can’t hear you” and after a few minuets they will walk away. It might take a half an hour…but in the end you’ll win!

2) “Sure, I’ll play that in a minuet.” / “Coming Right Up!!!”

This is my favorite excuse and the favorite excuse of many top DJs.

When agreeing to the requester you give them with a sense of power and satisfaction. They strut away feeling like they run the club, and might even buy you a drink (bonus!).

They’ll go back to their table or to their friends happy and content, and most likely they’ll forget they ever asked you for it. But on the rare occasion they realize you haven’t actually played what they asked for yet, you can just respond, “it’s coming up next” and then keep going as you are. Some Djs prefer the more direct “Coming right up!” line.

Another, perhaps safer option, is to have a girlfriend, friend of retarded monkey take the requests enthusiastically for you thereby rendering you all but innocent!
