A lot of DJs forget why party venues hire DJs. Its because DJs are entertainers.
Having a DJ in the room creates a better, more energetic feel to a room than having music play off of a juke box. This is a fact.
So if the DJ can create all this energy, why is it that so many DJs just look at their laptops like they are checking their email?
The best DJs, the ones that have the biggest following and the most loyal tribe are the ones that let loose and pump up the energy like the guy in this video.
Okay he might not look cool because he is a little older and his movements make it look like he’s having a seizure but he’s doing his best at being an entertainer. You should too!
A friend who works with Steve Angello just let me know that Steve just threw up a video reflecting back on the year that was.
This year was HUGE for Steve and the Sweedish House Mafia. He remixed “Show Me Love”, had a legendary residency at Pacha Ibiza this summer called the Dark Forrest and who could forget the fist fight he got into with Paris Hilton.
I get a lot of emails asking How To DJ with Serato and weather DJing with Serato and Traktor is different from learning how to dj on DJ CD Players or vinyl turntables. (For more advice on DJ Gear like Serato, Beatmatching, Mixing and Getting Gigs make sure you sign up for our dj training newsletter by CLICKING HERE NOW!)
Now for those of you that don’t know, Serato and Traktor are digital mixing systems that let you mix just off of your laptop or the conventional CDJs or turntables while still being able to play the MP3s off of your laptop.
So instead of explaining the differences myself I found a great walk through of the serato dj software and dj mixing system online.
You will also quickly realize after watching this video that DJs are really just technology nerds that somehow get mis-placed as cool…
It doesn’t matter if it is at a nightclub, a rave or a friend’s house party… getting a dj gig is something that 99% of all DJs will never expearience. Everyone wants to learn how to dj so they can play gigs but most sadly end up never getting a dj job.
To help you get your first gigs I am going to post a link to the second part of DJ Tech Tools “How To Be A Successful DJ” series of dj advice articles.
As funny as it sounds… the secret to learning how to dj and beatmatch doesn’t actually have anything to do with beatmatching. (To see some video DJ Lessons on beatmatching sign up for our newsletter by clicking HERE now!
ALL new DJs struggle with beatmatching. Some more than others. This makes sense because the human brain isn’t trained to listen to two different sounds and determine their speeds. And the process of mixing takes it one step further because not only do we have to focus on two different songs… we have to be able to tell which one is going faster!
This is much easier to determine if you throw in the songs at the right time and the right speed… hence the importance of the “cue and throw”. It doesn’t matter if you are playing MP3s, Ableton Live, DJ Turntables, DJ CD Players, Traktor Studio or other Dj Software… The Cue and Throw are ESSENTIAL for DJing.
“Cueing Up A Record” means getting the record ready to play right on the first beat… and “throwing in a record” means playing that song at the right time and the right speed.
