This DJ controller has a built-in audio so you can use it for live performances or in the studio to make your own mixes. Faders and jog wheels are made for precision, so you will find it useful for all your DJ needs.

This DJ controller is a good machine for DJ newcomers and weekend DJs alike. It comes with two decks so you can mix multiple tracks, and it allows you to save mixes into your own music library.

Although the Hercules MP3 e2 is very small, for those who aren’t quite at the professional or experienced level, it is perfect. This machine does need a soundcard, which means you’ll have to spend more money if you want to act as a proper DJ. If however you only want to bust out the Hercules DJ Control MP3 e2 on birthdays, cookouts and New Year’s Eve then you don’t need an additional soundcard.

Ion Audio iCUE3 Discover – $61

For wannabe DJs or those simply looking to DJ as a hobby, you’ll find the Ion Audio iCUE3 Discover more than a capable device. For professional DJs who want more than just a little device that looks like a toy, this DJ controller just won’t do.

It does have a 2 deck controller that comes with EQ, pitch controls, scratch wheel and volume controls for each deck. The body is compact and it looks like what a non-pro thinks a DJ controller should look like. Unfortunately it does not come with a soundcard, but it does come with a MixVibes Cross LE software.

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S2 – $499

The Traktor Kontrol S2 is a smart device that comes with 2 decks and an all in one controller. Native Instruments claims that it is made to professional standards, and I have to agree. It’s compact but not toy-like, so respectable touring DJs can use it with confidence. It comes with a mic input and Traktor Pro 2 software and a soundcard so it’s pretty much ready to use.

The price of the Traktor Kontrol S2 is reasonable for most DJs, however it may be too much for a hobbyist. This is a great way for newcomers to get introduced into the world of Traktor machines and software. This is a good all around DJ controller that comes at a good price.

M-Audio Torq Xponent – $199

If you’re in the market for a high end, professional grade DJ controller at a very good price, then look no further than the M-Audio Torq Xponent. This controller comes with the Torq 1.5 software, plenty of FX and 2 digital decks. It is an effective DJ controller that includes amazing features like tempo-synced sampling and microphone inputs.

The one gaping hole in the Torq Xponent is that there are no additional outputs or inputs, so you’ll have to make due with what you have. At just over 8 pounds, this is a compact portable DJ controller that professional and dabbling DJs alike can appreciate.

M-Audio Torq MixLab – $39

The M-Audio Torq MixLab DJ controller is a neat little machine that will allow you to produce and perform your own music tracks immediately, but it doesn’t come with a soundcard. That’s not a deal breaker for most DJs considering how budget friendly the Torq MixLab is, but it is still another piece of DJ equipment you’ll need to buy.

There are many other DJ controllers that offer the same features in addition to a soundcard that you could find for a reasonable price. This machine is quite minimal, but if you’re pressed for cash you might find this a suitable machine to get your started.

Native Instruments Traktor Kontrol S4 – $899

The Traktor Kontrol S4 was designed to be a perfect system that perfectly merges software and hardware to work as harmonious as the tracks you’ll drop on it. It’s comes with Traktor S4 software, sample decks, sampling & scratching and mic inputs.

The new software works like a dream and the machine itself looks sleek and streamlined. Although some might consider it on the bulky side, it is just 7 ½ pounds so it can carry somewhat conveniently. The price is on the high side so this machine is just for the serious DJ.

Want to learn to dj? This is a picture from the club last Friday Night (taken on my iPhone) that might inspire you. If this picture doesn’t make you want to learn to DJ than I don’t know what will!

The nightclub was packed and people came ready to hit the dancefloor. This is how to learn to dj! I got paid very well and the dj equipment in the dj booth was awesome and tweaked for perfection. The room was filled with beautiful people and it was definitely a house music friendly crowd! It was a great night to be a DJ! I reflected back on my time when I started to learn to dj and was struggling to learn to mix and I remember that back then I couldn’t imagine DJing at nightclubs like this! All I wanted was to learn to dj online. Now I was the man controlling the party!

Makes you want to learn to dj right? This was two nights later on Sunday (taken on my iPhone):

Again I got paid very well to be there but this night didn’t go as smoothly. I showed up and there was no gear set up and nobody knew how to set the gear up (despite it being in my contract that the gear needs to be set up). So I had to find the gear in the basement of the club and then I had to set it all up. The club was dead all night. One group of people came in and it was a Japanese family that asked the server to turn the repetitive music down… Not a great night. Doesn’t really make you want to learn to dj does it?

Every once in a while I am reminded that while DJing is my wildest dream come true, the process of learning to dj online still has its ups and downs.

It is a lot easier to learn how to dj like a professional than most people think however along any journey, on the way to any goal, there are going to be times that will test your patience.

Case in point is the contrast between two different clubs that I played in one city… and the challenge of being faced with an empty dance floor when I’m used to play to hundreds of people every night I play. One inspires you to learn to dj… the other makes you never want to think about DJing again!

As you learn to dj you will find similar peaks and valleys as well. Some days things will go your way. You will be able to mix like crazy, you’ll be able to match beats, and you’ll figure out parts of your gear. It will never be easier to learn to dj! Other days you’ll struggle with something little or you will be hit with something like an empty club or a crowd that doesn’t like your style of music.

When you were learning to ride a bike you probably fell a few times. When you learned to play any sport you probably pulled some awkward moves along the way that made people laugh at you. The same when you learn to dj! There are always challenges along the way to any great goal, learning to dj included!

With this in mind I came up with some tips for getting through the challenges we all face when we set out figuring out how to learn to dj. Consider this a bit of DJ advice to help you advance as a dj. DJ Training at its finest:

1) Realize that no matter how bad it is, guys like me have done worse while we learn to dj. You stopped the wrong record playing at a house party in front of 50 people, causing what seemed like endless silence and booing…. Try it in front of 5000 people. I’ve been there… It takes you an hour to figure out how to turn on your mixer. Again I’ve been there but in front of 5000 people. :p Learning to dj is a process of making errors and mistakes… This is the fastest way to learn to dj. Make mistakes!

2) Mistakes and challenges are what make you learn. Each mistake and challenge is an opportunity in disguise because once you make enough mistakes, you won’t make them any more. All of a sudden you’re a solid DJ that doesn’t make mistakes… You have to make mistakes and come across challenges to learn to dj.

3) Some things are out of your control. There is so much going on in a party environment that a lot of stuff can go wrong. Although I believe that we can control pretty much everything around us, if a drunk girl tries to come up and flirt with you but falls and takes out one of the turntables, there isn’t much you can do (again…I’ve been there! ). When you decide you want to learn to dj these are some of the fun dj lessons you’ll have to learn. Again this is the fastest way to learn to dj!

4) The more challenges you blow through, the better and more confident DJ you become. You show up to a club and there is only one turntable. You find a way to mix despite the lack of gear. Next time you walk into a party or a club, you will feel awesome and confident that you’ll be able to rock it! A lot of DJs ask me how to gain more confidence…. the answer is to play as much as possible because the more you play, the more challenges you will face and the more confident you will become as you handle these challenges. The best DJs know how to learn to dj because they have gone through a ton of challenges!

5) With DJing the challenges can be tough but the reward is well worth it. To live like a rockstar DJ is worth the few challenges we face. On a challenges faced to reward ratio I’d say that it is the best job in the world because I know guys that have way tougher challenges with their jobs and life that don’t have as much fun or get paid as well as I do.

It doesn’t matter what type of music you’re playing: techno, trance, house music, or hip hop, if you can learn to take these challenges head on the you will become a much better DJ because of it. Start to learn to dj and never look back no matter what road blocks and down periods you hit!

If you do then these are the steps you’ll need to take:

2. Go out and buy the appropriate dj gear for learning to dj.
3. Find proper dj training. Dj lessons are great. Online dj lesson videos that help you learn to dj are even better.
4. You’ll practice mixing and dj scratching as you learn to dj.
5. Record your demo cd.
6. Go to the clubs, parties, raves, festivals, bars, weddings or any other event that you want to dj at and start handing out your demo cd. Make sure you give your cd to the promoters.

It looks easy enough doesn’t it? It can be if you start out properly. The step that most new djs miss when they learn to dj is they don’t invest in DJ training. They try to teach themselves to learn to dj and this is their fundamental flaw.

Teaching yourself with you learn to dj is like teaching yourself to cook. You can do it without someone showing you how, but it will not turn out right and it will take years of experimenting to learn what you could learn in just a few days with a course.

Learning to dj is no different. You can learn to dj like a pro withing a few weeks but only with proper dj training. And without a dj course, learning how to dj will take much longer and will be a lot more frustrating!

Believe me, I know! I tried to learn to dj by teaching myself and it took me over a year to learn to dj properly. It took me almost 2 years to get a gig. So I can tell you first hand that

ALL new DJs struggle with beatmatching. Some more than others. This makes sense because the human brain isn’t trained to listen to two different sounds and determine their speeds. And the process of mixing takes it one step further because not only do we have to focus on two different songs… we have to be able to tell which one is going faster!

This is much easier to determine if you throw in the songs at the right time and the right speed… hence the importance of the “cue and throw”. It doesn’t matter if you are playing MP3s, Ableton Live, DJ Turntables, DJ CD Players, Traktor Studio or other Dj Software… The Cue and Throw are ESSENTIAL for DJing.

“Cueing Up A Record” means getting the record ready to play right on the first beat… and “throwing in a record” means playing that song at the right time and the right speed.

When you are starting out as a beginner dj learning how to dj take my dj advice and spend the time to master the cue and throw before you move on to beatmaching. It will make learning to beatmatch so much easier!

I remember it like it was yesterday…

My mom and sat me down at the dinner table and said “Sean…Why do you want to learn how to DJ? You’re wasting your time… You should be focused on school and your job”. At the same time, my friends used to make fun of me for dj mixing techno music because hip hop was cool at my school.

I didn’t listen to any of them…

I went out and spent my hard earned money on DJ Lessons (I couldn’t afford many), I bought DJ DVDs, I read disc jockey message forums, I looked up DJ tutorials online and I even followed DJs around to watch them playing in nightclubs…

Do whatever it takes! Buy Dj lessons or DJ training products, even if you don’t have the money. Travel to a city where there are lots of top level DJs to learn from. Just do whatever it takes and you too will one day soon be living your dream just like I am…

Having great looking business cards just screams out a DJs professionalism to his or her clients, competitors and most importantly, the club owners and promoters. Business cards are one of the best self-promotion techniques used to get your name out there and sell yourself, and the majority of DJ’s forget all about them!

Above all, DJs like you and I don’t have to spend money on professional designers, printers and fancy paper to produce great results that score DJ gigs!

On of the biggest DJ lessons that I came across when I was learning how to DJ is that these personal and professional methods of promoting yourself as a DJ are invaluable! Anyone can make a Disc Jockey business card, but here are some rules you should follow to get great results:

1) Your Disc Jockey business card must represent your entire Djing business and DJ personality through a small piece of paper. Make yours stand out from any other competitors by making them catchy and unique. A DJ with an attractive business card will always win over one with a tacky and distracting one with bright colors and too much information.

2) The most important and obvious information on your card should be your contact details! What use is a business card if the club owner, another DJ or a promoer can’t get in contact with you?

Your phone number, DJ email address and DJ website URL are always great pieces of information to put on any business card. The easier it is for a client to get in contact with you, the more inclined they will be to do so!

Most DJs don’t leave cards, they just squiggle their name with a marker on their Demo CD or an MP3 CD and this CD ends up in the garbage. Wheras a card says “I’m a professional DJ, I take djing seriously, I can rock your dance floor!”

3) When it comes to printing, glossy or photo paper is ideal. Try not to use normal printer paper; it is too thin and will curl up very easily being that size. Don’t fancy designing them yourself? No problem! There are TONS of free business card templates online that would be perfect for the DJ.

4) Put your business card inside a clear case with your DJ Demo Mix CD. This is the 1 – 2 punch that has landed me a ton of gigs. The CD shows them that you know how to dj mix like a pro and the card shows that you are a professional.

This little dj promo trick could double or even quadruple your DJ gigs.

There is one dj lesson from pro djs that I hear over and over again.

Its funny because some DJs will think that this post contradicts another post I made a few weeks ago called Djing: Its About Your Sound where I told DJs that it is crucial to develop a sound.

A lot of DJs took that post the wrong way. They though I was saying that you had to limit your music to one sub genre to be successful as a DJ. This is not true. Yes, you have to develop your own unique sound. But your sound can consist of as many genres as you like. In fact, listening to and playing different styles of music is the best way to develop your own unique sound.

Furthermore, you will be thrown into lots of different situations as a DJ where you will be required to play different styles of music that what you would like to or what you would normally play.

I’ll give you some funny examples from my DJing…

I’ve shown up to DJ at a rave and was moved to the back room where they were expecting funky house music. ummm

I’ve been told by the promoter to bring hard house music to open for Steve Angello only to show up and find out that the crowd wanted to hear Deep House and only Deep House. Hmmmm

I’ve been at huge dj festivals where I’ve seen DJs like Eric Morillo on after Snoop Dog or Mr Scruff and they have had to adapt and keep the dance floor full.

How about you!

You probably want to play trance, house, techno, minimal techno, progressive, electro, hip hop or breaks. Perhaps something else.

Did you know that no matter what style of music you play, you probably won’t be able to play it at your first few gigs… What do I mean?

Lets say you love Trance, you want to learn to dj and want to be the next Dj Tiesto! You score a gig opening for Andy Moor or Gareth Emery. Some big Trance DJ that you like. You will have to play progressive house / progressive trance to open for him… not the big room trance music that you love.

Same goes for house. If you’re opening for a house DJ you play Deep House…. and so on.

So the dj lesson here is that you will get more gigs and be able to play in all sorts of different situations if you have a wide collection of music.

Play big anthem hits all night? No… Learn how to dj with your own unique sound but you can still do this while dabbling in different genres of music.

This is a question that I get asked all the time… “Should I learn to how to dj by taking dj lessons in my city or should I find online video dj lessons?

Aside from that, here is the best advice I can give! You’re going to pay $50 – $100 per hour for a DJ Lesson. Thats a lot of money considering you will need HOURS of dj instruction! Furthermore, DJ Lessons won’t help you choose your gear, set up your gear or teach you how to get gigs.

If you can find some great DJ Lesson videos online then jump all over them. For the price of one DJ Lesson or less, you can get a video that will teach you everything about DJing that you can watch over and over. Stop, rewind, stop rewind.

Furthmore, most DJs that are teaching lessons were never that good. They may be technically proficient but most were never professional DJs because if they were, they wouldn’t have to be teaching Dj Lessons for money.

Yet thousands of new DJs take Dj lessons every day. Why?
